Carabinieri and Italian government

In the 1960s Alfa Romeo became famous for its small cars and models specifically designed for the Italian police — "Panthers" and Carabinieri; among them the glorious "Giulia Super" or the 2600 Sprint GT, which acquired the expressive nickname of "Inseguimento" dir. trl. "to chase or predate" (this car is wrongly supposed to be the one that the famous Roman police marshal and unrivalled driver Armandino Spadafora brought down on the Spanish Steps in 1960 while following some robbers — it was actually a black Ferrari 250 GT/E — this picture of Giulia , one of the dozens about this legend, is taken from a movie and not at the Spanish Steps). The colours of the Alfa Romeos used by the Polizia were grey/blue with white stripes and writing, known as "Pantera" (Panther), enhancing the aggressive look of the Alfa (particularly the Giulia series), while the Carabinieri Alfas were dark blue with white roofs and red stripes, known as the "Gazzella" (Antelope) denoting the speed and agility of these "Pattuglie" (armed response patrol units). However, the term "Pantera" became used interchangeably and the image helped create a no-nonsense, determined and respected perception by the general public of the men that drove these cars, true to their history.
Since then, Alfas remain the chosen mount of the Carabinieri (renowned arm of the Italian Armed Forces seconded only partly for civilian Policing purposes), Polizia Autostradale (Highway Police) and the conventional police service (Polizia). Successively, the following Alfa Romeo Berlinas have found favour for Italian Police and Government employment:

- Alfa Romeo 75
- Alfa Romeo 164 (Official Vehicles)
- Alfa Romeo 155
- Alfa Romeo 156

- Alfa Romeo 159

Alfa MiTo GTA

Following beforehand letters that Alfa Romeo had axed affairs to aftermath the Alfa MiTo GTA, the Italian automaker has reportedly antiseptic that the activity has not been canceled completely, aloof postponed.
The Alfa MiTo GTA was apparent in abstraction anatomy at this year's Geneva Motor Show. At the time, Alfa said the car would be produced and on the bazaar afore the end of the year. Packing a 240hp 1.8-liter turbo four, the Alfa MiTo GTA was set to animate the company's achievement brand with a amalgamation priced to attenuate the Mini JCW. When acrid bread-and-butter altitude hit – and Fiat started snapping up assets larboard and appropriate – the hot bear affairs reportedly took a hit. According to sources aural the company, though, the automaker is still agog on accepting it done... eventually. Certainly, that won't appear afore the end of the year.

2011 Alfa Romeo Giulia..will it be account the wait?

Motor Trend has acquaint its best assumption of the Alfa Romeo Giulia (née 159). It isn't a bad attractive car, but like a antecedent abstract booty on the car, it attending like the Mito adenoids has artlessly been pasted on addition rear end – in this case, that of the Opel Insignia.
In MT's image, The advantageous squarness of the accepted car, abnormally set off by the affronted nose, accept been forsaken for a rising, addition anatomy that still offers a advantageous attitude aided by a behemothic set of wheels. We're admirers of the arched rear, but the barefaced abandon of the mockup and the C-pillar's run into the haunches takes us aback to the General Motors car.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia is due to go on auction in Europe in the closing bisected of 2011, so we apparently won't see the absolute affair until after abutting year.

Alfa Romeo MiTo too small for the U.S.?

Small cars accept historically struggled in the acreage of the free, home of the brave. Typically admired as an reconsideration by Detroit, our accepted calm crop (Focus, Aveo, Caliber) needs added fertilizer. Imported "penalty boxes" fair somewhat better, but for every Honda Fit there's a Daihatsu Charade. Long news short, accumulation margins are abbreviate and Americans are big bodies with big families that drive big distances. However, BMW's fresh Mini fabricated austere and hasty appropriate by giving baby car buyers lots of agreeable and aerial appearance (and a aerial amount tag). BMW's awash 1.5 actor of them, and accustomed the Mini's success, it seems like a no brainer that Alfa Romeo (maybe via Chrysler) would accompany the adult little MiTo to our shores. Italian styling, adventurous administration and aerial MPGs assume like a acceptable combo. Sadly, no -- maybe.
According to Alfa Romeo CEO Sergio Cravero, the MiTo is, "probably too baby for today's U.S. market." In case you're wondering, the MiTo is the admeasurement of a Honda Fit. He goes on to say that, "A basic artefact appraisal for a adventurous three-door baby auto showed abeyant volumes in the U.S. appropriate now are almost 20,000 units a year. That is not abundant to accomplish it a applicable business case." Worrying about business cases in the U.S. is absolutely a fresh archetype for Alfa. But we're not activity to affront too much, as Alfa Romeos will be authoritative their way to American dealerships ancient in 2011. The aboriginal of which will apparently be the Milano, a five-door mid-sized auto that we'll see at the Geneva Motor Show. Still, apropos the credible no-show of the MiTo, we're a little bummed.

The Most Expensive Alfa Romeo

Although best abreast Alfa Romeos are positioned at aggressive amount points, the company's name has about the aforementioned ascendancy as Ferrari or Maserati. But today all three of these admired Italian marques are endemic by the aforementioned company, so they anniversary booty a altered bazaar position. Except the 8C Competizione. That's the one archetypal that bursts adding walls amid the abstracted divisions, with anniversary one lending a duke appear the car's development and production. Alfa alone fabricated 500 examples, and they all went fast. But there are 500 added to come, and they could be alike added desirable.
Spurred absolutely by accepted demand, Alfa Romeo is architecture a additional run of convertible 8C Spiders. But acceptable luck accepting your easily on one. Of the 500 that will be built, alone 35 are destined for the United States. And back they get here, they'll be affairs for $299,000 apiece. But with appeal extensive far college than supply, you can bet that best will be trading easily at far college prices than that, giving fresh acceptation to the byword "nice assignment if you can get it".

Alfa Romeo Spider

The Alfa Romeo Spider first was introduced back in 1966 at the Geneva Motor show, where it was hailed as an instant classic by the auto-public. But at the presentation it was still an unnamed masterpiece, but that was about to change when the results of a competition in Italy produced the name "Duetto", and since it first name, history would show that with every change and new series it was re-christened by another alias. But the first Spiders now are referred to as the 105 series Spider/ "Classic" Spider and it was created using the body style of the classic 2-seat roadster.
The original design of the car was done by Pininfarina, who also played a big part in the car’s manufacturing, due to the car’s unique monocoque creation; which is the incorporation of "crumple zones" at both the front and the rear. The Alfa Romeo Spider have gone through a lot of changes over its almost 3 decade history, both mechanically and aesthetically; with these changes occurring every couple of years, it kept the Spider appealing to all audiences, and it made the Spider stay constantly unique when compared to even itself.
The Spider’s basic proportional blueprint consisted of a length of 4255mm (167.5in) Duetto; a curb weight of 996 kgs (21906 lbs) Duetto; a wheelbase of 2250mm (88.6in) Duetto; a height of 1295mm (51in) Duetto; and a width of 1626mm (64in) Duetto. The Spider also came outfitted with a five-speed transmission, disc brakes, and independent front suspension. The engine of the Duetto was a form of the 1570cc Alfa Romeo Twin Cam, 4-cylinder engine, and outputted just about 109hp (81kW). The original Spider Duetto ran from 1966-1967.
The 1750 Spider Veloce replaced the Duetto in the latter part of 1967 with a 1779cc engine outputting 118PS (116hp or 87kW), and a torque of just 186N·m (137 ft·lbf). A new, smaller engine Spider was introduced in 1968; the 1300 Junior with a 1290cc engine with a max power of 89hp (66kW), but it was devoid of most of the first features of 1750 Veloce e.g. plastic headlight fairings, hubcaps, the brake servo, and the opening quarter-light. The 1st Series of the Spider, which included the original Duetto ran from 1966-1969, and became known by its alias of "Ossa di Sepia" or "Cuttlebone fish".
The 2nd Series of the Spider ran from 1970-1983, and was also known as "Fastback" or "Coda Tronca". The first major change was to the exterior of the 1750 Veloce, with the typical elongated round tail being remade into an ordinary cut-off tail know as the "Kamm Tail". The other appearance changes came from top hinged pedals; new door handles; a more raked windscreen; refined interior trim; a slightly different grille; and more luggage space. In 1971, the 2000 Spider Veloce was born with a new engine replacing the 1750 with a 1962cc, 132hp (98kW). The 1600 Junior was also given life also replacing the Junior 1300 with 1570cc engine outputting 110PS (108hp or 81kW).
The Series 3 Spider ran from 1983-1990 and was dubbed the "Aerodinamica". In 1982 was the launch of the new "2.0 litre Bosch fuel injection", which replaced the "SPICA mechanical injection". Also in that same year the Aerodinamica 2000 was born with a 1962cc engine with a max power of 128PS (126hp or 94kW) and a torque of 178N·m (131 ft·lbf). Alfa also introduced the "Green Four-leaf Clover" or "Quadrifoglio Verde" model in 1986, with many aesthetic changes to the exterior, but with the exact same engine of the regular 2000 Spider Veloce.
From 1990-1993 the 4th Series and its first important mechanical change was introduced with the "Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection with an electric fan". Other appearance changes occurred, also on the Type 4 Spider but the entire production of the Alfa Romeo Spider came to a sad end in 1993. However, a "Limited Edition Spider Commemorative Edition" was made for the North American market in May 1993 and was identified as a 1994 model.

Alfa Romeo 166

The Alfa Romeo 166 is an illustrious member of the Alfa Romeo family, and the Italian automaker has kept this tradition with a long fruitful production period from 1998 to 2007. This executive class car has its own unique appearance that is synonymous with the Alfa Romeo line; the pointed nose and the drooping headlights. The 166 was the successor of the 164 which also possessed and stuck to its reputation of unorthodox features, which the automaker considers to be “corporate” in stature.
This 4 door Sedan with an FF Layout, has a wheel base of 2720mm (107 inches), a height of 1416mm (55.7 in), a generous length of 4720 (185.8 in), and a width of 1810mm (71.2 in) making the Alfa Romeo 166 one of the heftiest Sedans on the market. But nevertheless, the 166 still received rave reviews for its handling distinctiveness, stylish designed exterior and the range of its engines.
The four different types of engines that the Alfa Romeo 166 were available with at the time of production are: a 2.0-litre Twin Spark engine (155PS), a 3.0 V6 (226PS), a 2.5 V6 (190PS) or a V6 2.0 Turbo (205PS). Whereas the diesel engine came in a L5 2.4 10v common rail turbodiesel edition with a 136, 140, and 150 PS yields. The 3.0, L5 2.4 and the V6 Turbo were distributed with a six speed manual gearbox, while the 2.5 and the 3.0 had the choice of a Sportronic automatic, and the TS model possessed a five speed gearbox.
The Alfa Romeo 166 had many problems with overall marketing and sales of the vehicle; in spite of its rave reviews, it was out done in sales by the stronger German made brands, and because of its immense depreciation factors in the UK. The car would be sold for roughly 30,000 British Pounds and its fall within a year would in the ballpark of a ghastly 13,000 British Pounds. It simply did not work out financially strong in the ending for its customers.
And even though, the 166 underwent a substantial makeover in 2003, it was still withdrawn from the right-hand drive markets in October 2005, because sales of the car still didn’t increase. A few markets kept the marketing of the 166 strictly to the company car arenas where it may still be well received, and where it built its standing.
Even though with all of its highlighted shortcomings, the Alfa Romeo 166 still possessed its poise and grandeur of its lineage and will go on, and morph into something else, that is certainly to become another trend setter in the Alfa Romeo family.

Most, however, significantly, the Triple-light clusters - the tubes that look as if it has no goal. While the rear, the tailgate is topped by a roof spoiler with integrated brake light for a sport. The new car is longer and wider, but less than the previous model. This low, wide, with large wheels of the machine gives an indication of the consultation. Since the Alfa Romeo 159 SportWagon is more than 105 millimeters for the old Alfa Romeo 156 Sportwagon, there are more legs for all. Alfa said that even if low, the improved access. However, the design of doors, and a slope toward the back of various cars in glazed area. Culminating in an angle that, well padded, it's still very painful, if you dig into the shoulder of openness, while in the car. Do you think that I learn, after a couple of times, but not. Audi RS4 2006

Thanks to Audi, you can use a machine the whole list of cars in Europe that you want to sell in North America. The previous-generation Audi RS4 was only a machine and was not sold in the United States, but the new Audi RS4 is coming stateside. And because he realized that most of Audi Americans are not interested in a super-absorbent fast food, you should choose the estate version of the new Face-A4 repealed as a basis for derivative Audi RS4 flames. Further development of the venerable 4.2-liters Audi V-8, the Redline at 8250 rpm and 420 hp at the output without the use of forced induction, like the previous RS4, a Twin-Turbo V - 6th Engineers have tried to weight down with the use of aluminum parts of the body and suspension parts, but the car weighs more Chunky 3600 pounds. We believe that the next PS-400-V-8 BMW M3 at least 150 kg less. Audi RS4 loans reach 62 km / h in 4.8 seconds, this is what they say, is the next M3. Although the Audi RS4 does not wave a M3 on the road, of course, can affect its counterparts from BMW - a revised version of the front opening, and lighter wheels Endrohre made a spectacle far more aggressive the city S4. We discover that the next round of the classic Ingolstadt-München rivalry as quickly as possible, hands on these two highly desirable Teutonic muscle cars.

Alfa Romeo Brera

Style Italdesign Alfa Romeo Brera Coupe concept has been demonstrated that, in Geneva in 2002 was a success, it is this new 2 +2 coupe - the successor to the Alfa Romeo GTV - and the new design of 159 monkeys. (Even if the credit for the Alfa Romeo Brera in Italy, automotive, design Magazine Editor Robert Cumberford, he says, ahem, the hacking of a previous study Zagato). The cut breathtaking Alfa Romeo builds on the new Premium platform, which are initially in cooperation with Saab, the Swedish motor vehicle by the joint venture. The 173.8 cm in length, is due to a car rear Multi-Link and control before the suspension, and the three units in common by Fiat and GM: a 2.2-liter four in line, direct injection, 185 c. 200-PS, 2.4-liter turbo direct injection diesel and a 3.2-liter V-6 produces 260 horses. The four-wheel drive is available as a six-speed automatic and manual transfer. The design, the large glass roof panel is said to promote air. The Alfa Romeo Brera is on sale in November and will be followed by a spider in the spring of 2006. Alfa Romeo says that, finally serious about returning to the U.S. market, where appropriate, at the earliest in 2007. Alfa Romeo during this almost every year since the United States market that, our sources indicate that mean that companies at the moment. If the Alfa Romeo Brera in the U.S., we are first in line to try this wonderful cups.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

There is much happening in the two months from the Sports Tourer Vision B concept was presented at the Detroit show (see our coverage of the Detroit show). Above all, Mercedes-Benz has recently decided, without delay, the U.S. started production of the premium minivan / People Mover - Mercedes-Benz Class B - at least until 2007 due to the weakness of the euro and other costs. Some U. S. Mercedes dealers have Frank relief, because the plates are full this year and next with the new CLS four-door coupé, the second generation M Class, and the next S-class, and many 'he asked them, if the Class B is for the U.S. market first, we have a concern. Someone can tell me, "dilution of brand value"? However, class A, before the wheel of production of class B has made its debut in Geneva and follows the sale in Europe this summer. It 'true that this is a very clever packaging. Arrangement of the engine and gearbox, in part, opens the passenger cell of large amounts of carrier and offer more security, because the engine leaves the cabin in case of severe frontal collision. Different combinations of folding seats, drums and disposal to ensure a wide and spacious cabin, but the outside is enough to overcrowded cities. Six petrol engines and diesel engines are offered. Although the Mercedes-Benz said that the class B, the United States was launched just moved can not be erased, we would not be surprised if in the end is never here.

Alfa Romeo 159

The new face of Alfa Romeo premieres in Geneva on the Brera coupe and this gorgeous 159 sedan, which replaces the Alfa Romeo 156. Unfortunately for Alfa, the 156 was also gorgeous, but it never sold well. The Alfa Romeo 159, like every new car, boasts a larger interior and higher chassis rigidity. Unlike other cars, it is available with Alfa's class-leading JTD direct-injection diesel engines and JTS direct-injection gasoline engines. The hottest engine is a 3.2-liter, 260-hp gasoline V-6, but oil burners don't suffer with the available 200-hp JTD. Backing up the engines is a choice of six-speed transmissions: manual, sequential manual, or automatic. Stability control is calibrated for performance, and wheel choices extend to eighteen-inchers. All-wheel drive with a Torsen center differential is optional. In late February, Fiat's new boss Sergio Marchionne once again floated the idea that Alfa Romeo may return to the U.S. by 2007. While that's within the realm of possibility, Fiat's financial problems might preclude such a push for the foreseeable future.

Alfa Romeo Giulia GTV

In the latter half of 1960s, Alfa Romeo had another formidable coupe to succeed Giulietta Sprint. This was Alfa Romeo Giulia GTV. In racing form Alfa Romeo GTA, it won four European Touring Car Championship in 1966, 67, 68 and 70. The road car was also highly praised for strong performance, good handling and everyday practicality. From 1963 to 1976, as much as 223,000 cars of various versions were sold.In 1963, Bertone's young designer Giorgetto Giugiaro designed the Giulia Sprint GT coupe from a shortened chassis of Giulia sedan. The car ran a 1570 cc twin-cam engine good for 106 horsepower and 112 mph. A couple of years later, the engine was tuned to 109 hp and the car was called Sprint GT Veloce (means "fast"), or simply Sprint GTV. This started the famous label GTV which is still being used today.

The Alfa Romeo GTV employed independent front suspensions with lower wishbones and a live axle rear suspensions like many contemporary coupes. Nevertheless, the front suspension mountings were easily adjustable while the live axle was made pretty light. Disc brakes were employed in all wheels to provide excellent stopping power. That was a very high-spec equipment by contemporary standard, just like today's ceramic brakes. Moreover, Alfa's lightweight all-alloy engine was always a benefit to chassis balance, no wonder the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTV handled brilliantly on the road as well as in racing circuits.Highlight of the Alfa Romeo GTV was the sweet revving twin-cam engine and the quick shifting 5-speed synchromesh gearbox. Their quality was yet to be matched by contemporary British sports cars as well as BMW 1600ti. However, the competitors were developing larger and more powerful engines, therefore in 1967 Alfa Romeo upgraded the 1.6 engine to 1779 cc and 118 hp. The car became Giulia 1750 GTV. It can be distinguished from earlier GTV by the 4 circular headlights (in contrast to two) and a 30 mm longer wheelbase to boost interior space. By 1970, an even faster model joined the range - 2000 GTV. It was powered by a 2-litre 132 hp version of the twin-cam engine. These two cars had really strong performance thus were the favourite among the Giulia GTV family. Also worth noting is that due to tax reasons, the majority of the fast Giulia sold in Europe was the GT 1300 Junior. It used a 1290 cc 89 hp engine. The original short-wheelbase bodyshell, twin headlights and the smaller engine meant it weighed only 930 kg, about 110 kg below a 1750 GTV, so it still had enough performance to please their drivers. Although it was never called a GTV, we still regard them as a member of the Giulia GTV family. The GTV's success can be indicated by its high price - the 1750 GTV was sold in UK for £2248 in 1968. That was much dearer than the contemporary Lotus Cortina (£1162), Fiat 124 Coupe (£1438), BMW 2002 (£1597) and even Lotus Elan +2 (£2119). It simply matched a Jaguar E-Type (£2300) !! Despite that, Alfa Romeo still sold 44,000 units of 1750 GTV and then 37,000 units of 2000 GTV. If it were not so exciting to drive, how could it have achieved that?

ALFA ROMEO GTV

Alfa Romeo could not throw it on heritage walk - so remember the good times with this method. Click here to PreviewWith that quite disturbing revelation of the Fiat's employers want to see Alfas Dodges rebranded as we think it is time to publish this little reminder that Mr. Marchionne is thinking about meddling with Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV S2 is the latest gorgeous cover star of classic and sports car magazine and we think Bertone-styled. Gem is one of the most beautiful Alfas ever. Alfa Romeo 159 or Brera definitely not a favor to the icon with blood but with Al Dodge Alfa Romeo not label? Travesty will not even start covering it ...

Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV

The original prototype and forebear of the Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV was unveiled at the companies new factory in Arese in 1963, and following a subsequent appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the car was put into production, then as the Giulia Sprint GT (or Bertone Coupe). This original iteration came with a 1600cc engine borrowed from the sedan, however twin carbs were used to provide the necessary increase in power to make the car more sporting.Mechanically the Giulia Sprint GT was a little underpowered, however it made up for the perceived shortcomings by providing ample standard kit, such as a 5 speed gearbox renowned for its beautifully slick operation, disc brakes to all four wheels and suspension revisions (such as mounting the shock-absorbers upside down) to ensure a sporting drive. It is testament to the technical innovation incorporated into the car that it was able to give the best of the Italian super-cars a run for their money on roads where suspension, and not straight line speed, were the measure of a great car.In 1965 the Giulia GTC, GTA and GTV were released. It was the Alfa Romeo GTV that, at face value, seemed to have only a few minor changes, but if you looked a little deeper you would see how significant these actually were. For instance, the inlet valve size was increased by 2mm, which improved power and now increased the maximum speed to a whopping 185 km/h.Then in 1967 the ultimate was released, the Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV. Changes to the beautiful Bertone design included smoothing out the step front and moving the indicators down to below the headlamps. The interior was sensational, with hooded central rev counter and Speedo, while the auxiliary gauges were put into the top of the centre console. The seats too came in for revision, now featuring cut outs between the centre of the seat and the side supports.

Characteristics of Alfa Romeo

The Alfa Romeo Spider and Alfa Romeo GTV were based on the then-current Fiat Group platform, called Tipo (Italian for 'type') 2,in this case a heavily modified version with an all new multilink rear suspension which allowed passive rear steering to help reduce understeer. The front suspension, engine, gearbox and drive was based on the 1992 - launched 155 saloon. For engines, the 1.8 16V (144 PS (142 hp/105.9 kW)) and 2.0 16v Twin Spark (150 PS (147.9 hp/110.3 kW)) were available along with a turbocharged 2.0 V6 that produced 202 PS (199.2 hp/148.6 kW) or a 3.0 V6 in either 12 (192 PS (189.4 hp/141.2 kW)) or 24 valves (220 PS (217 hp/161.8 kW)) and finally a 3.2 V6 24 valve.
The 2.0 V6, called V6 TB, was developed because of an Italian law that put an extra sales tax on cars with engines larger than two litres. It is basically a sleeved-down version of the three litre V6. The turbo was added for extra power while avoiding the tax.
When new the 3.0 V6 24V was the fastest production Alfa Romeo with a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). The 3.2 V6 24V GTV 240 PS (236.7 hp/176.5 kW) is currently fastest Stradale Alfa Romeo (introduced on the 2003 Alfa Romeo GTVs), capable of 0-60 mph in just over six seconds and a top speed of 158 mph (254 km/h).

The 2.0 16v Twin Spark engine gives up to 35 mpg-imp (8.1 L/100 km; 29 mpg-US).It has variable inlet cam timing, giving 25 degrees of variation to improve torque and give a more linear power delivery. The TS engine has a belt driven balance shaft to improve the smoothness of the engine. The TS was the best-selling version of the Alfa Romeo GTV in the UK.
The last restyle of the Alfa Romeo GTV in 2003 also introduced the 2.0 JTS (165 PS (162.7 hp/121.4 kW)) engine, which uses direct injection, in a similar way to a diesel engine. This engine uses only one spark plug per cylinder and has a variable-length inlet manifold to improve torque at low revs.
To save weight the bonnet, inner and outer front wings and bumpers were made from a composite material called KMC.At the time, the bonnet was the largest single composite moulding on a production car. When the bonnet is opened, two rectangular Hella headlamps are revealed with separate bulbs for dip and main beam, behind the four round holes in the bonnet.
The 916 was equipped as standard with power steering, twin airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, Bosch ABS, electric heated door mirrors, electric frameless windows with one-touch operation for the driver's side, height adjustable headlamps, front foglamps, reach and rake adjustable leather clad steering wheel, stitched leather gear knob, an automatic electric aerial,a Clarion face-off stereo with six speakers and central locking.
An alarm system and immobiliser was fitted with remote locking/unlocking. The bodyshell was galvanised with full plastic wheelarch liners and is therefore rustproof.
The only additional options were the Lusso pack, metallic paint and electric sunroof.
Details included a one-piece rear lamp/foglamp/indicator strip across the rear of the body, internal electric release for the bootlid and filler flap, the minor instruments in the centre console angled towards the driver. At its launch, many journalists commented that Alfa had improved overall build quality considerably and that it came very close to equalling its German rivals. The fuel tank has a capacity of 70 litres (18 US gal; 15 imp gal). The battery, CD autochanger and fuel tank are located in the boot, and the tank is ahead of the rear axle line, behind the rear seats for increased safety. The power assisted steering has a very high ratio, giving 2.2 turns lock-to-lock. The bonnet and bootlid are supported on nitrogen filled struts.
Criticisms of the model have been that it is hard to park due to its large turning circle and low seating position, which mean that the end of the bonnet and corners are outside the driver's line of sight. The doors are very long and need plenty of space in a car park, and the boot is very small at only 3.8 cubic feet (0.11 m3), made worse if the spacesaver wheel is included. There are also commonly electrical problems.Contrary to rumors in well maintained cars there are relatively few mechanical problems.
The top of the range (3.0 and 3.2 litre) versions have three mufflers and four catalytic converters installed at the factory on the CF3 engine and onwards (2001-), which result in a somewhat muted sound. Common aftermarket alterations to the exhaust system are straight pipe replacements for some of the mufflers (usually leaving only a single or double muffler), twin tailpipes (which require modifications to the rear bumper), stainless steel systems and replacing the standard cats with race cats or even cat replacement pipes (on the CF3 these replacement pipes do not give lambda engine light warnings). Additional modifications include the popular air filter replacement by BMC CDA, fitting Alfa Romeo GTA cams, etc. Modifications such as these completely change the sound produced by the Arese V6 and are said by some to rival the engine note of Italian V8 engines.

Design of Alfa Romeo GTV

Both cars were designed by Pininfarina. and the phase 3 Spiders were assembled by Pininfarina.
The car was produced in three distinct phases. It is a typical Italian design, with the Alfa Romeo grille with dual round headlights recalling the 1750 GTV of the late 1960s and 1970s. It has a wedge shape with a low nose and high kicked up tail. The back of the car is "cut-off" with a "Kamm tail" giving improved aerodynamics. The car is very low slung and entry and exit is quite difficult. The Alfa Romeo Spider shares these traits with the Alfa Romeo GTV except that the rear is rounded. The Alfa Romeo Spider featured a folding soft-top with five hoop frame, which completely disappears from sight under a flush fitting cover. An electric hood folding mechanism is fitted on later versions. As would be expected, the Alfa Romeo GTV has a much more rigid chassis, although considerable work was done to ensure that the Alfa Romeo Spider does not suffer from the traditional convertible problem of scuttle shake.
Wheels are 15 inch perforated light alloy as standard, 16 inch teardrop wheels with 205/50 tyres are part of the Lusso option package, along with Momo leather seats and air conditioning. A factory option of 17 inch teledial wheels with 225/45 tyres was popular, as are aftermarket 18 inch wheels with even wider 235/35 or 235/40 tyres. Another popular modification are lowered and uprated road springs to reduce body roll when cornering, making the TS cars corner very flatly, even at higher speeds. The phase 1 cars had a black plastic grille in the nose of the bonnet, without the normal chrome edging. A popular modification is to fit a phase 2 grille which has a chrome border and wire mesh centre.
The Lusso has become a separate model rather than an option pack on the phase 2 cars and the standard car was renamed the "Turismo". All V6 cars were of Lusso specification. Very few Turismos were sold in the UK.
A spacesaver spare wheel was supplied, and there was a no-cost option of an aerosol can of tyre repair sealant. This was a popular option as it increased the usable size of the very small boot.

Alfa Romeo Spider & GTV

The Alfa Romeo GTV (Gran Turismo Veloce) (English: Fast Grand Tourer) and Alfa Romeo Spider were two sports cars produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo from 1995 to 2006. The Alfa Romeo GTV is a 2+2 coupé, and the Spider is a two-seater cabriolet version of the GTV. The rear seats on the GTV can be optionally deleted to increase the small boot space. The Spider has no rear seats, only a small boot for storage.
Known by the internal Alfa Romeo designation 916, the Alfa Romeo GTV and Alfa Romeo Spider were launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1995. The GTV's name placed it as the successor to the long-discontinued Alfetta GTV coupe, whereas the Spider was effectively the replacement for the then 30 year-old Giulia Spider.

Series 4 Alfa Romeo Spider (1990/91-1993)

The final major change to the Alfa Romeo Spider came in 1990. The primary mechanical change was that the Alfa Romeo Spider was given Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection with an electric fan. Externally, the Alfa Romeo Spider lost its front under-bumper spoiler and the rear trunk-lid spoiler and picked up 164-style rear lights stretching across the width of the car as well as plastic bumpers the same color is the car. This also marked the first generation of this car with automatic transmission.
In North America, the styling changes did not appear until the 1991 model year; 1990 models featured the Motronic fuel injection but retained the black bumpers. Power steering, larger knee bolsters and a driver-side airbag also appeared as standard for North American market Spiders, which were available in two configurations: Alfa Romeo Spider and Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. Primary differences were in standard equipment: the Alfa Romeo Veloce substituted leather seats for the base model's vinyl; 15" alloy wheels were one size up from the standard steel wheels with hubcaps; and air conditioning and a cloth top were standard.
Production of the original Alfa Romeo Spider ended in 1993. An all-new Alfa Spider arrived one year later.
A limited edition Alfa Romeo Spider Commemorative Edition was produced for the North American market in 1993 and was badged as a 1994 model. Each of the 190 Spider CEs imported to the United States had a small plaque affixed to the dashboard that identified which of the 190 cars it was. The CEs differed from previous Spiders in that they had a special badge on the nose, a "CE" script badge below the "Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce" badge on the tail, unique gold center caps on the "phonedial" 15" wheels, and burled wood interior trim. Each model came with a leather portfolio, numbered keychain, and documentation. The cars followed the VIN sequence 008276 to 008460, although there does not appear to be any systematic order numbering. It appears that all of the 1994 Alfa Romeo Spider Commemorative Editions were produced in May 1993.

Series 3 Alfa Romeo Spider (1982/83-1989/90)

The Series 3 Alfa Romeo Spider was previewed in North America for the 1982 model year with the introduction of 2.0 liter Bosch electronic fuel injection to replace the SPICA mechanical injection.
The Alfa Romeo Spider underwent a major styling revamp in 1983, which saw the introduction of black rubber front and rear bumpers. The front bumper incorporated the grille and a small soft rubber spoiler was added to the trunk lid. The change altered the exterior appearance of the car considerably and was not universally praised by enthusiasts. Various other minor mechanical and aesthetic modifications were also made, and the 1600 car (never available in North America) dropped the "Junior" name.
The Quadrifoglio Verde (Green Fourleaf Clover) model was introduced in 1986, with many aesthetic tweaks, including sideskirts, mirrors, new front and rear spoilers, hard rubber trunk mounted spoilers with integral 3rd stoplight and optional removable hardtop. It was otherwise mechanically identical to the standard Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce model, with a 1962 cc double overhead cam, four-cylinder engine (twin two-barrel carburetors in Europe; North American models retained the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection introduced for the 1982 model year except that the VVT mechanism was now L-Jet activated) and five-speed manual transmission.
The interiors was revised with a new center console, lower dash panels (to meet U.S. regulations) and a single monopod gauge cluster (with electronic gauges). For the North American market a model dubbed the Graduate was added in tribute to the car's famous appearance in the 1967 film, The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman.
The Graduate was intended as a less expensive "entry-level" Alfa Romeo. While it had the same engine and transmission as the Quadrifoglio and Alfa Romeo Spider, it lacked the alloy wheels and luxury features of the other two models. The Graduate model had manual windows, basic vinyl seats, a vinyl top, and steel wheels as standard. Air conditioning and a dealer-installed radio were the only options. It first appeared in 1985 in North America and continued until 1990.
Minor changes occurred from 1986-89, including new paint colors, a center high mount stop lamp (CHMSL) midway through 1986 for North American models, a move away from the fade-prone brown carpet and new turn signal levers. Some 1988 models featured automatic seatbelts that extended from a large device between the front seats.

Series 2 Alfa Romeo Spider (1970-1982/83)

In 1970 the first significant change to the exterior styling was introduced on the 1750 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce, with the original's distinctive elongated round tail changed to a more conventional cut-off tail, called the "Kamm tail", as well as improving the luggage space. Numerous other small changes took place both inside and out, such as a slightly different grille, new doorhandles, a more raked windscreen, top-hinged pedals and improved interior trim.
1971 saw the Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce get a new, larger powerplant - a 1962 cc, 132 hp (98 kW) unit - and consequently the name was changed from 1750 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce to 2000 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. The 1600 Alfa Romeo Spider restarted production a year later as the Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Junior, and was visually identical to the 1300.
1974 saw the introduction of the rare, factory request, Spider-Targa. Based upon the Alfa Romeo Spider, it featured a Porsche style solid rear window and lift out roof panels, all made out of black GRP type material. Less than 2,000 models of such type were ever made and was the only part solid roof Spider until the introduction of the factory crafted hard top.
The 1300 and 2000 cars were modified in 1974 and 1975 respectively to include two small seats behind the front seats, becoming a "two plus two" four seater. The 1300 model was discontinued in 1977. Also, between 1974 and 1976, the early-style stainless-steel bumpers were discontinued and replaced with black, rubber-clad units to meet increasingly stringent North American crash requirements.

Spider From Alfa Romeo Arrives In New Zealand

Just in time for the New Zealand spring season, the newest version of the prestigious Alfa Romeo Spider model has arrived. And just like spring, this new version is bringing along with it new features, and a new type of performance that car lovers would surely be gaping at. One thing that you can notice with the Alfa Romeo Spider is that this vehicle seems to be quite attached to how the original unit looked like. In fact, despite the vehicle sporting and undergoing various changes, the style and design of the vehicle itself does not change. Only minute changes in the style and in its Alfa Romeo car parts have been tampered with. However, most changes can be found under the hood of this exemplary vehicle. Such a behavior from the automotive company that creates this vehicle is explained by Lawrie Malatios. Malatios is the general manager for the brand in the New Zealand area. He does say, "Alfa Romeo’s core values are performance and style. The Alfa Romeo Spider is the embodiment of these values. Originally the quickest way to achieve performance was a light, open top body that was sleek and aerodynamic to maximize the available potential from the engine and chassis, in other words, the original sports car. Today, the new Spider is the epitome of the Alfa Romeo, with performance, style and ability in depth. It remains the very definition of Alfa Romeo." At present, you can find two versions of the Alfa Romeo Spider. One starts with a base retail price of $81,990. And this one would be holding engine options that range from the 2.2 liter JTS engine with four cylinders and has the capacity to create 136 kW to the 3.2 liter JTS V6 engine that has the capacity to produce some 191 units of kW. Aside from such engine choices for the vehicle, the Alfa Romeo Spider also comes with six speed manual gearboxes to add in the power. There are also some differentials installed with the vehicle and one of these is the Torsen C unit which is self locking and has been mounted at the very center of the engine system.

History of Alfa Romeo

The company that became Alfa Romeo was founded as Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) in 1906 by the French automobile firm of Alexandre Darracq, with some Italian investors. One of them, Cavaliere Ugo Stella, an aristocrat from Milan, became chairman of the SAID in 1909. The firm's initial location was in Naples, but even before the construction of the planned factory had started, Darracq decided late 1906 that Milan would be a more suitable location and accordingly a tract of land was acquired in the Milan suburb of Portello, where a new factory of 6,700 square metres (8,000 sq yd) was erected. Late 1909, the Italian Darracq cars were selling slowly and Stella, with the other Italian co-investors, founded a new company named A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), initially still in partnership with Darracq. The first non-Darracq car produced by company was the 1910 24 HP, designed by Giuseppe Merosi, hired in 1909 for designing new cars more suitable to the Italian market. Merosi would go on to design a series of new A.L.F.A. cars, with more powerful engines (40-60 HP). A.L.F.A. also ventured into motor racing, drivers Franchini and Ronzoni competing in the 1911 Targa Florio with two 24 HP models. In 1914, an advanced Grand Prix car was designed and built, the GP1914 which featured a four cylinder, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and twin ignition. However, the onset of World War I halted automobile production at A.L.F.A. for three years.
In August 1915 the company came under the direction of Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, who converted the factory to produce military hardware for the Italian and Allied war efforts. Munitions, aircraft engines and other components, compressors and generators based on the company's existing car engines were produced in a vastly enlarged factory during the war. When the war was over, Alfa Romeo invested his war profits in acquiring locomotive and railways carriage plants in Saronno (Costruzioni Meccaniche di Saronno), Rome (Officine Meccaniche di Roma) and Naples (Officine Ferroviarie Meridionali), which were added to his A.L.F.A. ownership. Car production had not been considered at first, but resumed in 1919 since parts for the completion of 105 cars were still lying at the A.L.F.A. factory since 1915. In 1920, the name of the company was changed to Alfa Romeo with the Torpedo 20-30 HP becoming the first car to be badged as such.Their first success came in 1920 when Giuseppe Campari won at Mugello and continued with second place in the Targa Florio driven by Enzo Ferrari. Giuseppe Merosi continued as head designer, and the company continued to produce solid road cars as well as successful race cars (including the 40-60 HP and the RL Targa Florio).
In 1923 Vittorio Jano was lured away from Fiat, partly thanks to the persuasion of a young Alfa racing driver named Enzo Ferrari, to replace Merosi as chief designer at Alfa Romeo. The first Alfa Romeo under Jano was the P2 Grand Prix car, which won Alfa Romeo the inaugural world championship for Grand Prix cars in 1925. For Alfa road cars Jano developed a series of small-to-medium-displacement 4, 6, and 8 cylinder inline power plants based on the P2 unit that established the classic architecture of Alfa Romeo engines, with light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers, centrally-located plugs, two rows of overhead valves per cylinder bank and dual overhead cams. Jano's designs proved to be both reliable and powerful.
Enzo Ferrari proved to be a better team manager than driver, and when the factory team was privatised, it then became Scuderia Ferrari. When Ferrari left Alfa Romeo, he went on to build his own cars. Tazio Nuvolari often drove for Alfa Romeo , winning many races prior to World War II.
In 1928 Nicola Romeo left, with Alfa Romeo going broke after defense contracts ended, and in the end of 1932 Alfa Romeo was rescued by the government, which then had effective control. Alfa became an instrument of Mussolini's Italy, a national emblem. During this period Alfa Romeo built bespoke vehicles for the wealthy, with the bodies normally built by Touring of Milan or Pinin Farina. This was the era that peaked with the legendary Alfa Romeo 2900B Type 35 racers.
The Alfa Romeo factory (converted during wartime to the production of Macchi C.202 Folgore engines) was bombed during World War II, and struggled to return to profitability after the war. The luxury vehicles were out. Smaller mass-produced vehicles began to be produced in Alfa's factories beginning with the 1954 model year, with the introduction of the Giulietta series of berline (saloons/sedans), coupes and open two-seaters. All three varieties shared what would become the classic Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine, initially in 1300 cc form. This engine would eventually be enlarged to just under 2 liters (1962 cc) and would remain in production through 1995

Alfa Romeo 159 1750 TBi

At the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo unveiled numerous major developments heralding the re-launch of the brand on the global stage. Protagonist of the event was the new Alfa Romeo 159 (saloon and Sportwagon versions). The new 159 is designed to express a sporting yet seductive personality and boasts road holding and performance that set new standards for this class of car. Two new engines in particular (a 200 HP, 1750 cc turbocharged petrol engine and a 170 HP 2.0 JTDM diesel) place the Alfa Romeo 159 firmly in market segment D, in the power range that accounts for over half of Alfa Romeo sales.
Under their fascinating and highly personal exterior, all Alfa Romeos offer a choice of superb engines, all packed with the latest technology and bursting with performance. Alfa Romeo engines are the perfect embodiment of the sporting soul that has always set the marque apart from the competition. The Alfa Romeo 159 is certainly no exception. Starting from April 2009, the new 159 will be available with a brand new engine: a 1750 cc turbocharged petrol engine that conforms to Euro 5 standards and develops 200 HP between 4,750 and 5,500 rpm with 320 Nm of torque at only 1,400 rpm.
The new 1750 cc turbo petrol engine (manufactured by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies) comes combined with a six speed manual gearbox and boasts advanced ignition control solutions including direct fuel injection, two continuously variable valve timing units, a turbocharger and a revolutionary scavenging control system. The resulting performance is comparable to - or better than - that of many 3 litre engines while still delivering fuel consumption typical of a compact four cylinder unit.
The force behind the development of any Alfa Romeo engine is the company's determination to use technology to enhance driving pleasure. This certainly applies to the development of the new, Euro 5, "1750 Turbo Benzina 200 CV" unit destined immediately for the Alfa Romeo 159 and later on for the Alfa Romeo Brera, Spider and 159 Sportwagon.
This engine takes the Alfa Romeo 159, with its refined Italian styling and typical sporting elegance to an impressive top speed of 235 kph and accelerates it from 0 to 100 kph in just 7.7 seconds. The 200 HP Alfa Romeo 159 1750 TBi is therefore a true representative of Alfa's exclusive motoring lifestyle. Far from being a mere 'means of transport', the new 159 is a real driver's car. It delivers genuine sports performance and muscular acceleration thanks to generous torque and smooth response even at low revs and the extended power band of a modern, advanced petrol engine that minimises the need for you to 'work' the gearbox. The engine sound too is inspiring without ever becoming tiresome.
